Putuguq & Kublu and the Attack of the Amautalik!
Putuguq & Kublu and the Attack of the Amautalik!
The girl and the monster stared at each other…and the little orphan girl quickly thought of something.
Her toes were visible through the holes in her kamik. The amautalik had never seen toes before and she thought the toes were monsters.
The amautalik was afraid when the little orphan girl wiggled her toes, so she ran away. The girl had saved all the children from being taken by an amautalik.
Readers return to Arviq Bay in the third installment of the “Putuguq & Kublu” graphic novel series. In this book, the titular brother and sister duo are visiting their grandparent’s house for a lunch of uujuq (caribou stew). The sibling relationship established in previous books crackles with antagonistic energy as Putuguq makes bold declarations of bravery while Kublu rolls her eyes and tells a friend to “ignore him.” Children with siblings will easily relate to their humorous dynamic. Akulukjuk and Christopher’s dialogue is light and accessible while challenging readers unfamiliar with Inuktitut to learn new vocabulary. Before sitting down to eat, Putuguq removes his worn out and stinky kamiik (pair of skin boots) to reveal his sock with a hole for his big toe. This inspires their grandparents to tell the traditional story of the amautalik (child-snatching ogress) and the orphan girl who outwits the monster.
Arijanto’s expressive illustrations contrast the warmth of the Elders’ home with the mythological happenings out on the tundra. Perspective is used to great effect, highlighting action in the foreground while a tender moment unfolds in the background between grandmother and granddaughter before moving to aerial panels of the lunch table showcasing palaugaaq (bannock). After lunch, Putuguq and Kublu mount a performance inspired by the story that comes to a hilarious surprise conclusion to the disgust of Kublu.
Putuguq & Kublu and the Attack of the Amautalik! is a superb addition to a delightful series that delivers knowledge and adventure in equal measure.
