Midnight & Moon
Midnight & Moon
Only Moon can hear the quick
in and out of the girl's breath,
the soft giggle. He follows the
sound to a pile of oats on the ground,
put there just for him.
Clara is a young girl who does not speak. This difference makes her stand out from others, particularly among peers at school. She is an outsider. One of Clara’s exceptional gifts, however, is her ability to tune into hearing things that most others ignore. This leads her to discover an animal kindred spirit whom she names Moon. Moon cannot see but shares an exceptional sense of hearing, similar to Clara’s. The two kindred spirits each have one close friend who is opposite but understands and accepts them just the way they are. For Clara, it is a friend named Jack with whom she spends time inside and outside of school. For Moon, it is a horse companion named Midnight.
Midnight and Moon is a beautiful, soft story. The messages and themes in this picture book may require a deeper explanation for young readers. Those who view themselves as introverted or as outcasts in some way are likely to find comfort in their personal connection to Moon and Clara. Additionally, this picture book serves as a reminder to be open to seeing others for whom they are.
A unique feature of this picture book is the parallel stories told of Clara and Jack, Midnight and Moon. The text is filled with rich descriptions designed to tap into readers’ senses. Complementary illustrations using soft colours and lines create a whimsical feel. Each illustration has been brilliantly designed using details that will stand out to some or be ignored by others, depending on whether the viewer is more like Midnight or Moon.
Midnight and Moon would make a lovely addition to any children’s library.
