I Am Not a Tin Can!
I Am Not a Tin Can!
Hello, I am Number 808. Can we be friends?
I don’t think so. You are a tin can.
I am not a tin can.
Yes you are.
No, I am not.
When a robot named Bob goes in search of a friend, he meets a young boy who cannot see past his outer (tin) appearance. Despite Bob’s proving that he can do math, bake a cake and play music, the boy cannot imagine him as a “real” friend. Through several challenges, Bob continues to try to prove he can be a friend, and, in the telling of the story, readers see the two actually playing as friends would, maybe without even knowing it! Through the ultimate challenge of Bob’s not actually having a heart, readers see a lovely act of one being painted on him by the young boy, an act which gives readers a feeling of warmth and acceptance.
I feel warm.
I think you’re happy.
Happy…?
It’s a feeling you get when you make a new friend.
I Am Not a Tin Can! has fun illustrations and a simple dialogue to encourage conversation with the audience. The back-and-forth style narration is fun and relatable for all ages. I Am Not a Tin Can! will be an effective storybook to engage the listener in how to make new friends and to accept differences. The author Barroux, still believes that life in books, where dogs can fly and trees are blue, is more extraordinary.
