Alone Together: A Curious Exploration of Loneliness
Alone Together: A Curious Exploration of Loneliness
We may want to be alone at times but when we are lonely, we often want to feel unlonely, and that means we want to make connections. Being curious about the world around us and what we can learn from loneliness gives us a way to connect with others.
Alone Together is based on the podcast of the same name that aired over fifty episodes in 2021 and 2022. It was hosted by Patti (Peg) Fong, author, educator and journalist. Alone Together A Curious Exploration of Loneliness is the latest addition to the “Orca Think” collection that provides a range of books on world headline issues. Readers are motivated to question and to actively engage in generating ideas for action on issues that concern their future.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, people experienced imposed isolation and social distancing. Loneliness was prevalent. In Alone Together, the reading audience begins “A Curious Exploration of Loneliness”. The format of the five chapters engages even a reluctant reader. The book is filled with great photos, colourful, cartoon style illustrations by award-winning illustrator Jonathan Dyck, clear text and interesting text boxes. These features promote discussion and questions. The interesting personal stories from around the world that are shared help the reader discover what others say about loneliness. That “curious exploration” includes looking at songs, art, books, history, media and pop culture.
What do comic book heroes, trees, China Lily soya sauce, sweat pants and bees have to do with loneliness? How does kindness matter, and what is the science of kindness? What exactly is meant by FOMO, the ‘fear of missing out’, and how is it connected to boredom? And how do any or all of these fit into exploring loneliness. Obviously, there is a lot to talk about and explore in Alone Together: A Curious Exploration of Loneliness.
It is very evident that journalist and educator Patti Fong is knowledgeable about the topic of loneliness and has a rich collection of human stories, historical and scientific research and knowledge of the value of music, literature and arts. This background, together with her skill as an author, provides middle year readers with the opportunity to explore the human issue of loneliness and being alone. The title alone will grab readers’ interest and provide a journey of curiosity. Alone Together is a resource not only for preteen or teen audience but also an engaging resource for any adult who has involvement or connection with young people. A downloadable Alone Together Teacher Guide is available on the Orca website.
