We’re Happy You’re Here
We’re Happy You’re Here
Dear Small Human,
Many special people did many special things for you to be here today.
We wished.
We hoped.
We dreamed.
This lovely story is a celebration of becoming parents and welcoming new bundles of joy through both conventional ways and with a “mix of science, wisdom, and love”. The saying “It takes a village” when raising children is very apparent in this story as readers will see all generations and various people outside of the family taking part in preparation for a new member of the family. From planning financially and attending doctor’s appointments, to getting the nursery ready, it is recognized that not only do the expecting parents prepare, but they get help from all their family members, doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and various agencies. Sato’s beautiful and colourful digital illustrations depict diverse families and the many ways littles are welcomed into a family. These include surrogacy, adoption, IVF, and blended families just to name a few. It does not matter how a new baby is brought into this world or a child welcomed into a family, but rather it is the effort, planning, and love it takes along the way. A lot of support is needed from the very beginning of the journey and throughout life from family, friends, and community members. Wilkins’ story and Sato’s illustrations demonstrate that love and effort perfectly.
We’re Happy You’re Here is recommended for younger readers as the story is short and the language used is concise and easy to understand. This would be a great book for new siblings and parents or for helping children to explore what it means to be a diverse family and the importance of community and family support.
