It’s a They!
Our family loves our precious new sibling. They are our precious star!
We don’t know who they’ll become, but we love them just as they are.
Using rhyming couplets and gender inclusive language, It’s a They! helps older siblings welcome new babies into their families. The book asks the most common question new parents and older siblings of a baby get, “Is it a boy or a girl?” Instead of the answer provided in common and heavily gendered books, this one answers with, “They!” and “We don’t know who they’ll become, but we’ll love them just as they are.”
It’s a They is illustrated with photographs of babies and older siblings interacting with babies. The photos are bright and full of love between siblings. It is clear that an effort was made to include diverse looking families in the photos, and children should be able to find people who look like them among the pages of the book.
It's a They is a refreshing change from the heavily gendered materials and language commonly used around new babies and will be a welcome addition for anyone who feels uncomfortable with the pink or blue baby binary. With engaging photos and cute and clever rhymes, It’s a They! is a sweet welcome baby book that gently introduces the concept of gender-neutral pronouns and fills a need for parents who wish to wait until their child expresses a gender to begin using gendered language for them. [Editor’s Note: The book is also available in a bilingual paperback version: It’s a They! = Bienvenue à notre adelphe!.]
