Rumie Goes Rafting
Teetering high on the ladder, Rumie hung some ribbons from the mast. "Will our raft be steady on the stream?"
"We'll take it on a safety test tomorrow," said Uncle, "if I can find the life vests..."
But Rumie was no longer listening. They were going on a real adventure!
Tomorrow couldn't come fast enough! Images of magical, faraway lands grew in Rumie's mind.
"What's at the end of the forest, Uncle? Will we make it that far?"
Now it was Uncle Hawthorne who was not listening. "Where did I put those vests?"
Rumie is an adventurous young mouse searching for their next bit of fun. Out in the forest, they discover the stream is too shallow for their uncle's boat, but a ladybug floating on a leaf inspires Rumie to create a raft with their Uncle Hawthrone. Setting straight to work, Rumie and Uncle Hawthorne build a raft. During the night, rain falls and anticipation builds for Rumie as they can't wait to test the raft now that the stream will be deeper in the morning. Ignoring Uncle's comments about a life vest, Rumie decides to test the raft by themselves. Rumie celebrates when the rafts floats, but Rumie does not see the approaching waterfall. It is too late, and Rumie falls with a splash in the water. Luckily, Uncle is close by and offers Rumie a buoy to help them get back to shore. Making a safer choice, Rumie and Uncle decide to take the boat to the lake along with life vests, of course! Despite the mishap on the raft. Rumie is already imagining their next adventure.
In her debut picture book, Marentette uses plush mice set in the forest with natural materials and found objects to create the charming images which add whimsy and magical feel to Rumie Goes Rafting. The imagery speaks to children's creativity and curiosity as they find possibilities with everyday objects around them. This story nurtures children's sense of adventure while gently teaching the importance of patience and safety in all adventures.
