Squirrel-ish
Squirrel-ish
I've been thinking... squirrels and rats aren't so different.
I just need to be a little more squirrel-ish. Maybe if I sit up like they do, I'll score some free peanuts, too.
In Squirrel-ish, readers are introduced to an endearing rat who, like many of us, yearns for acceptance in society. Whether shooed away by a broom, scolded, or drenched with cold water from a garden hose, Rat keenly observes the unfairness - something a cuter, yet not that different, squirrel never experiences. Rat meticulously creates and studies comparative anatomical and behavioral posters in his quest to become more squirrel-like. But when he attempts to replicate the bushy tail, a sudden rainfall disrupts his plans until he seizes a broom and uses its bristles to fashion a sturdier version. Suddenly, it lives the life of a squirrel, complete with free peanuts. However, when a playful pack of dogs startles Rat, he realizes that being himself is not so bad.
Squirrel-ish is a delightful and heartwarming title that champions the value of self-acceptance. A quick and amusing read, Squirrel-ish is certain to capture the interest of both young and old readers. Look out for the charming details, such as at the end of the book when a squirrel ponders shaving its tail to more closely resemble a rat. Some pages feature comic-like illustrations while others have graphics that span both pages. The variety in illustrative placement adds intrigue and character to the book. With its vibrant and entertaining graphics, fast-paced plot, and a message that warms the heart, this title is a perfect addition to all children's collections.
