Made by Maxine
Meet Maxine. She likes making new things… from old things. She de-constructs and re-constructs. Unscrews and re-glues. Maxine makes everything better. (Mostly.)
Meet Milton. From the day Maxine spotted him in the pet shop windows, she was hooked. His scales shimmered, his fins fluttered… Was he waving to her? Since he was a fish, it was hard to tell. Maxine fell in love with Milton. He was a special fish, and deserved a better home than a boring glass bowl. “If I can dream it, I can make it!” she said.
Made by Maxine is a story about Maxine, a young girl who loves to tinker and create things. She becomes fond of a little goldfish named Milton, so much so that she repurposes an old bike to create a pedal powered fish-feeder for him. Maxine can create many amazing things, such as music from vegetables and a homemade fish tank. Maxine puts her creative juices to the test when her teacher, Miss McMiller, announces that they are having a class Pet Parade. The only problem is that Milton, being a fish, doesn’t have feet, and so he can’t march in the parade in the conventional way. After a lot of hard work, Maxine created a Fishmobile Pet Parade Float. Miss McMiller was impressed with Maxine’s creation and finding a way to include the pet fish in the parade. Maxine said that, if she could dream it, then she could make it.
Illustrations are an important aspect to any picture book, and Holly Hatam does not disappoint. Her collage-like illustrations are vivid and detailed. Readers will enjoy reading this book and finding the various illustrations that add depth to the story.
The “maker movement” has become very popular in recent years. In many schools and libraries, children are encouraged to tinker, create and problem solve. Made by Maxine would tie in perfectly to these programs and serve as a great introduction to young makers. Made by Maxine would be a great addition to any school or public library collection.
