Be Prepared: The Frankie MacDonald Guide to Life, the Weather, and Everything
A lot of people don’t realize this, but sometimes, if someone studies really hard like Frankie does, they can teach themselves how to understand things like meteorology (see sidebar on page 5). In addition to reading the weather models and patterns, Frankie also monitors the local weather using a portable weather station that’s set up on his back deck, and he checks the weather all over the world using his smartphone, and sometimes his computer.
Frankie’s even received a couple of awards for his hard work, including a 214 Cape Breton Vital Excellence Award, which celebrated his work as a “weatherman and Cape Breton Ambassador.” He’s also received a Silver Creator Award from YouTube—which is really special because YouTube only gives those to YouTubers with more than one hundred thousand subscribers.
“Winter is my favourite season because I get to do a lot of weather forecasting online to warn people about blizzards, ice storms, and extreme cold weather. I try to help people, to prevent car accidents and other dangers.” – Frankie
Be Prepared! is more than a compilation of fascinating weather facts and advice, although that content will attract and engage young science fans. The real significance of the book is only hinted at in the subtitle: The Frankie MacDonald Guide to Life, the Weather, and Everything. Those who haven’t yet met Frankie on YouTube will enjoy hearing the candid account from this young man about his autism and how he has overcome the many challenges he’s experienced growing up: teasing and bullying at a young age, difficulties communicating, struggles with frustration from stress and the misconception that he wasn’t smart. But Frankie was fortunate to receive loving support from his dad and through his school years from speech therapists and the dedicated presence of a favorite teachers’ aide. Frankie’s photographic memory allowed him to easily recall details—like weather statistics—and his interest in math and maps led to his passion for all things ‘weather related’. Not one to be underestimated, he quickly picked up on computer technology and taught himself about meteorology until he was able to create his own YouTube videos. The Internet is the perfect medium for him to learn, and social media lets him share and interact with others. Frankie’s determination has earned him fans and friends wherever his YouTube channel is viewed.
Besides Frankie’s inspiring biography (that’s the ‘Guide to Life’ part of the title), the book is filled with inserts about weather definitions and explanations, his quotes about weather phenomena, ‘Frankie's Fast Facts’, and neat weather trivia (that’s the ‘Guide to Weather’ part). The ‘Guide to Everything’ part offers Frankie’s wisdom about things like choosing a career—“you have to keep learning, even when it gets hard”—and about bullying—tell someone, because “they’re picking on you because they’re upset.” Being prepared? Frankie suggests “if there’s a big storm coming, stay inside.” He should know since he’s reported on everything from hurricanes and tornadoes to lightning strikes and earthquakes. He’s managed to turn his longstanding fear of thunderstorms into curiosity and excitement, both catalysts for learning. There’s even a quiz on the last page. You can test your knowledge to qualify for the Frankie MacDonald Seal of Approval.
The writing style of author Sarah Sawler is straightforward, lively and upbeat. Her descriptions of Frankie’s low moments are thoughtful and honest. You can’t help admiring how he has applied each bit of new knowledge he’s acquired to achieve his lifelong ambition to be a weather forecaster, and cheering as he’s moved forward and gained strength of character. And along the way, you’ll find you’ve learned a whole lot of new facts about weather to share with friends. Share this book, too, with someone who has autism and let them be inspired by Frankie’s positive vibes.
